I am a playwright whose first career was as a physician working as a family doctor in a rural underserved region of New York, then in federal health policy, and at last returning to my home town, NYC, to work at the City University of New York Medical School in directing its programs in social and community medicine. A product of earlier student activist times and summer theater. I began writing for the stage a number of years ago when I came to believe that person-based stories had a better chance of shaping peoples’ understanding and compassion than did all the best evidence of the world’s realities. (Not that it is clear these days where the truth lies.) A New York raised kid, I have had an early and life-long love of the theater and it is in this craft that I began to work. My ad hoc training has been through workshops at the Frederick Douglas Writing Center, Playwrights Horizons, and Primary Stages.
I write realist dramas – though never entirely devoid of humor – and absurdist dark comedies. My characters wrestle with decisions of conscience and consequence, both personal and political. They are often people whose work life figures prominently in the conflicts they face. Music is present within the plays, sometimes as backdrop, other times as integral to its characters as they find joy or seek solace from the circumstances they face.
A member of the Dramatists Guild, I have had productions at the Ventura Court (Marsh Light) and Road Theaters (Lake Anne) in Studio City, CA, and at the Tank (War Stories) in New York City.
