“Risky Playwright” Emma Goldman-Sherman Unveils Risqué New Play “WHORTICULTURE” at Bernie Wohl

The 29th Street Playwrights Collective presents a staged reading of WHORTICULTURE, Tuesday, June 6, 2017, 7:30pm at the Bernie Wohl Center as part of the New Works Series. There will also be an industry reading on Wednesday, May 31, 2pm at Dramatists Guild Fund Music Room.

WHORTICULTURE, a confrontational tragicomedy, written by Emma Goldman-Sherman, uses non-traditional structure, spoken-word, and masks to explore the darker roots of the way girls grow up in current American social media, pop music, racist, rape culture. Explicit content.

Emma Goldman-Sherman has been twice-named “Risky Playwright” by Cutting Ball Theatre of San Francisco for 2014 and 2015, with WHY BIRDS FLY and ABRAHAM'S DAUGHTERS, which was also seen last year at Lady Liberty Festival and Intersections.org
.

Directed by Caitlin Wees (One Minute Play Festival), WHORTICULTURE, features Sarah Kiefer, Twinkle Burke and Teresa Hsu, with Emily Rahm reading stage directions.

Emma Goldman-Sherman has received the Jane Chambers Award for PERFECT WOMEN, and the Richard Maibaum Award for plays addressing social justice.  She teaches playwriting and poetry/spoken word to adults and at-risk youth via New York Writers Workshop and works as a dramaturg for the Great Plains Theatre Conference, the 29th Street Playwrights Collective and Write Now Workshop. Recent plays include HARE TODAY for The Every 28 Hours Plays, a response to Ferguson, produced by Claudia Alick (OSF) and Dominic D'Andrea, who also produced TRAFFICK, directed by co-producer Caitlin Wees for the 1MPF at the New Ohio.  “COUNTING IN SHA’AB" was part of the 2015 ReOrient Festival of plays about the Middle East, produced by Golden Thread Productions in San Francisco.
